The highest rated user comments are denoted by a south-facing arrow, yet users must click on the north-facing arrow to increase a comments rating. Using a south-facing arrow to represent the highest rated comments is also unintuitive; increasing numbers go up, not down.
When users scan the comments section of a web page they may simply act according to the arrows, not reading the action labels, which may induce incorrect selections.

Failing to utilize commonly used visual representations will force the user to consciously engage with the user interface in a way that is uncomfortable, which reduces the speed at which they could be navigating and performing desired tasks.
You should leverage this characteristic by reserving commonly used locations for various graphical elements such as having the logo on the top left, search field on the top right, exit icon on the top right, etc.
Both Microsoft and Apple place their logo on the top left, and the search field on the top right of their websites. This form of consistency in layout helps users feel less dis-oriented when they browse a new and unfamiliar site. For example, an airline site should have a ticket-booking system, while a music-sharing site should have a media player. A video-sharing website like YouTube is obviously expected to have a video player.
This is a great example of consistency in that the features and functionality of the site supports what the user expects. The content, the UI elements, fonts, backgrounds and colors should be in harmony and feel consistent at every touch point.
Meanwhile, having a branding and style guide to follow helps when faced with design decisions such as colors and fonts. Having a style and branding manual can help you make sure your visual elements are consistent throughout your site.
The Take Away Consistency and standards is acknowledged as an essential design principle and should be applied throughout the content and interactions within your product. There are several aspects of consistency that we can look at when improving our designs, this includes the language we use, the UI elements we choose, the way we lay out our site, the functions and features we include, as well as the visual components we decide on like color and font.
Whether you design GUI systems or Web pages, you can Understand the many considerations involved in interface and screen design Learn the rationale and apply the rules for an effective design methodology Identify the components of graphical and Web interfaces and screens -- windows, menus, and controls Design and organize screens and Web pages that encourage efficient, accurate comprehension and execution Create screen icons and graphics and choose screen colors that make displays easier and more comfortable to use Perform the user interface design process, including interface development and testing show more Table of contents About the Author.

Some is fine for reinforcing the author's points, but this book has too much - I have frequently read through a bulleted list of design points presented first , only to then read exactly the same information in a slightly expanded form over many more pages.
This is specifically true in what might be considered the heart of this book - the fourth chapter of Part 2; Step 3: Principles of Good Interface and Screen Design. It covers in detail part three of the author's fourteen-step procedure for UI design.
This chapter alone is about pages long! That said, even though this may not be the most concise source of application and web UI design guidelines, it makes up for that in breadth and depth, and the credibility and authority of its author. For a book that claims to be the definitive guide, its content is very old.
The dialogs look like they are from the early 90s. And, so are the standards cited. The Microsoft guidelines from are cited as a current reference. I supposed someone could try to claim that the lessons presented are 'timeless', but to me, that is ridiculous.
User interfaces are not timeless. The larger problem I have is the redundancy. The same information is presented over, and over, and over. site Edition Verified download. This book is a course requirement.
